Delores (Dee)'s Story

Unbelievable that it has already been 40 years! Following graduation, I continued working my high school co-op job at an insurance company. In the fall, I enrolled at Palmer Jr. College in their evening program while continuing to work during the day. I then went to work for Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company, got married, graduated from Palmer and enrolled at Marycrest College. After graduating from Marycrest with a BA in Business, I thought I could finally catch my breath¿working full-time while going to school full-time is a tough uphill battle. But, there were opportunities at Iowa-Illinois in the accounting field. So¿ back to school I went; and two years later had a BA in Accounting from St. Ambrose College and was promoted to Accountant and later Sr. Accountant. I figured I was on a roll, so I began MBA classes through the University of Iowa, got half-way through the program, and simply ran out of steam. My husband, Stan, was also living this crazy routine; we both got tired of burning the candle at both ends and decided we needed a life. We started doing a lot of camping and canoeing, which included several trips to the canoe boundary waters and canoe racing. We started jogging and eventually graduated to running and then running road races. I¿ve run three full marathons, several half marathons and numerous 10Ks and 5Ks (you wouldn¿t know it to look at me now!) We became involved with volleyball, sometimes playing in 4 or 5 leagues per week, taking classes, and even attending volleyball summer camps¿picture two old codgers playing volleyball with thirty-forty high school girls! My husband loved it, though, because we were playing on women¿s height nets. One night following our volleyball games, my team went out for snacks to a restaurant performing karaoke. You guessed it: a new hobby! Yes, shy and quiet Dee Bankson sang karaoke! Eventually, my husband¿s work moved us out to Colorado, just outside of Denver. We love Colorado! We both like to hike and ski and it¿s great to be able to go up to the mountains anytime we want¿if only that pesky t...Expand for more
hing called ¿a job¿ didn¿t get in the way! I began taking vocal lessons with the goal of sounding better at karaoke. But, my instructor had other plans for me. He gradually channeled me away from pop and country music into some Broadway show tunes and then into opera. Because of his encouragement, I auditioned for amateur community theater and have been cast in several musicals, straight plays and operas. I also began piano lessons, and am proud to say I now play at a third grade level¿I found this is a skill that is very difficult to learn as an adult! After a two year stint with a high tech company, I went to work at the local utility company¿Xcel Energy. I worked there until 2006, at which time my husband¿s work moved us to Germany. As a civilian working for the Federal Government, he wanted to do his part to support our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We were stationed in Germany, but out of every eighteen month period, he spent six months in Iraq. He served two six month tours in Iraq contracting for food services for the troops and one month in Kuwait. When he wasn¿t in Iraq, we were able to do a lot of traveling throughout Europe and even made two trips to Egypt. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Germany and tried to make the most of it. We made an attempt at learning the language (another difficult thing for adults) and got pretty good at ordering food and beer in restaurants and checking into Gästhauses. German beers are sehr gut! We moved back to the States in late 2008. We¿re very happy to be back, because no matter what, there is no place like the United States. I didn¿t plan to go back to work, but I fell into a job that was too good to pass up. I now work for yet another utility in Colorado: Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association. Interestingly enough, the man who hired me is the same person who hired me eleven years ago at Xcel! I tease him about making the same mistake twice! But, I really like my job and plan to be here at least another three years before retiring for good. Then, MAYBE, I can finally catch my breath!
